30,000 Retirees and a Weekend Moderation Bot
I was unexpectedly invited to join the admin team of an online community for retirees and those nearing retirement. The group exploded almost overnight, surging to over 30,000 members in just a single week.
Looking through the flood of posts and interactions, the data reveals fascinating human stories. You see the deep desire for freedom from the daily corporate grind, mixed with very real concerns about health, financial security, and finding purpose after work.
To keep up with the massive influx of content, I quickly built an automated moderation tool to screen and filter posts based on our community criteria.
I touched social network systems nearly a decade ago, but never went this deep into specialized moderation tooling. It is funny how a sudden wave in human dynamics can pull you right back into writing practical code over the weekend.
