AWS Local Zone Live in Hanoi: A Game-Changer for Tech Architecture in Vietnam

AWS Local Zone Live in Hanoi

AWS Local Zones are officially live in Hanoi (announcement), a massive win for architects battling unstable submarine cables.

1. What is a Local Zone?

  • AWS Region (Singapore): The "Mega Mall" offering all 200+ services at low costs, but traveling from Hanoi takes 30-50ms.
  • Local Zone (Hanoi): The "convenience store" in your lobby. It offers ultra-low latency (1-5ms), but stocks only essentials (EC2, EBS, VPC, ECS/EKS).

2. Latency Solved

This deployment solves Latency, not throughput.

  • Before: Hanoi -> Cables -> Singapore -> Process -> Return = 40-100ms (or timeouts).
  • Now: Hanoi -> Local Zone -> Process -> Return = < 5ms.

3. When to Pay the Premium?

Resources here cost 10-20% more than in Singapore.

🟩 When to use it:

  • Data Residency: Finance/Gov data must remain in Vietnam.
  • Ultra-Low Latency: Gaming, high-frequency trading, live streaming.
  • Hybrid Cloud: Connecting Hanoi data centers via AWS Direct Connect.

🟥 When to avoid it:

  • Standard Web Hosting: CloudFront CDN caches at Edge Locations just fine.
  • Heavy Processing: Data lakes and batch processing belong in Singapore to save costs.

Summary: Use the Hanoi Local Zone for millisecond performance or compliance, but keep heavy workloads in Singapore!
