Shedding the Small Things
Sitting down at 4 AM with a hot coffee and songs from my youth, I suddenly realized how quietly life has changed through the smallest things.
I used to carry a heavy bunch of keys and loved collecting keychains. But after nearly ten years living in an apartment and using public transit, physical keys have completely disappeared from my daily routine. The elevator access is on my phone, and the front door opens with a fingerprint. All the little headaches of losing or forgetting keys just vanished.
I do not smoke, yet I used to collect lighters. Today, there is zero reason to carry one in my pocket.
Besides my phone, the only physical item left on me is my watch. Even then, it is not for telling time or wearing as jewelry—it is simply there to track my health metrics.
As time goes by, I find myself wanting to strip away physical accessories. And along with that, wanting my mind to shed the unnecessary noise from the world around me.
