The Art of Listening: Choosing Silence in a World of Noise
Let’s be completely honest: the urge to show off is a natural human instinct. We all have a psychological need for validation. Even when launching my project at em.aslando.life, part of my motivation is self-promotion—a strategic move to showcase my expertise and build a coaching pipeline. Acknowledging this within ourselves is the first step of true self-awareness.
However, navigating this behavior in daily life requires a different kind of discipline, especially when dealing with others who constantly brag.
Lately, I have made a conscious choice when encountering people who boast: I choose silence.
In the past, the immediate instinct might have been to push back, match their energy, or share an equally impressive counter-achievement. But stepping into that arena is a losing transaction. It wastes your limited mental bandwidth on a shallow ego game.
Choosing silence provides two major strategic advantages:
- Preserving Mental Energy: Your focus is your most valuable resource. By refusing to engage in competitive talking, you keep your mind clear for the things that actually matter—your family, your health, and your core work.
- Observing True Realities: When you stop talking and just listen, you shift from a participant to a data observer. You quickly realize that people usually brag about what they desperately fear they lack. Their boasting exposes their deepest insecurities.
True humility isn't about hiding your value; it is about having enough internal validation that you no longer need to prove your worth in casual conversations. Let others have their stage. Save your voice for building things that speak for themselves.
