The Double-Frog Syndrome: The Mid-Career Trap
In my career mentorship sessions, I frequently cross paths with a specific, poignant pattern. It affects professionals who are no longer young, yet not old, who have spent too many consecutive years within a single, stagnant organization.
They are suffering from what I call the "Double-Frog Syndrome"
First, they are the 'Frog in the Well'. By staying in one closed ecosystem for too long, they become masters of internal legacy systems. But the well is deep, blinding them to how fast the outside market is evolving. They believe they have ten years of experience, when in reality, it is just one year of experience repeated ten times.
Second, they are the 'Frog in the Boiling Water'. When an organization begins to decay, the temperature rises gradually. Driven by the illusion of stability, they adapt. They endure the silent toxic debt of the environment, unaware that this passive adaptation is slowly paralyzing their survival instincts.
When the structural collapse finally hits, the well vanishes. They are forced into the open market, only to realize their skills are deprecated and their muscles to jump are gone.
It is heartbreaking to witness.
Stability is a loose concept. True uptime doesn't come from holding onto a sinking ship; it comes from keeping your core stack compatible with the world outside the well. Don't let the comfort of a warm pot boil away your capability to leap.
