The Great Separation: How AI is Filtering Engineering Managers

AI is not killing the Engineering Manager role. It is filtering it.

The traditional "Ticket Pusher" is dead. If your daily job as an EM consists of moving Jira tasks, chasing people for status updates, compiling weekly reports, and reminding engineers to log their time—you are already obsolete. As Anthony Jackson highlights in his sharp analysis on The Great Separation, automated Git webhooks and LLM bots now handle this administrative layer faster, cheaper, and without human error.

We are witnessing a brutal division of EMs into two extreme poles:

  • The Eliminated (The Information Broker): Non-technical managers who lost their coding roots and survive purely by managing bureaucracy. As AI automates delivery tracking, these communication proxies are simply being phased out.
  • The Irreplaceable (The Tech-Led Coach): Matured EMs who deploy automated sensors and DORA metrics to handle 80% of process overhead. They treat management as a system, freeing up their bandwidth to focus on what matters: unblocking engineers, managing human dynamics, and tackling deep technical debt.

Stop acting like a human dashboard. Your value is no longer found in relaying metrics up and down the corporate ladder.

As I argue in the upcoming EM Playbook, to survive the modern era, you must pivot. Automate the tracking layer completely. Spend your energy on the two things AI cannot replicate: high-level architectural guardrails and deep human coaching.

If the administrative friction is removed from your job tomorrow, what actual value do you bring to your team?
