The Machine That Runs on Fear
A status went around this week. AI will sweep through small outsourcing companies, it said, and take many old devs, PMs, and tech leads with it. Then a line about students: talented, but no slot to grow.
I saw it right away. This is a course-selling play built on fear. Normally I would pick a side, agree or push back, since I am one of the targets. This time I just want to stand outside and watch what is running.
The first thing to notice is not the content. It is the shape.
It insults no one. It argues, predicts a dark future, and speaks like someone who has seen through it all. It looks reasonable. Researchers call this fear speech, and it spreads further than hate speech. Because it is not toxic. It has logic. So people trust it.
The machine does not choose what is true. It chooses what keeps people watching. Fear is the cheapest fuel.
Everyone around it acts with good reason. The writer says what they believe. The page shares it and also gives away free material. Old devs feel the sting, because part of it is true. Students worry, and the worry is fair. Course sellers profit from the fear, but the fear was there before them. No one is the villain, and anxiety still spreads.
The status says AI will erase the middle layer. It does not erase it. It renames it. Every new technology grows a new layer of people explaining it to everyone else. That status is one layer. The course is another. This post is one too.
I don't stand outside the machine. I am inside it, writing about it.
People fear, and fear sells.
