The Manager's Dilemma: Shield or Vent?

The Manager's Dilemma: Shield or Vent?

When leadership drops an impossible deadline, an Engineering Manager has a choice.

The easy path: become a vent. Dump the panic straight down to the team. "Leadership is angry, everyone works overtime this weekend." You feel lighter immediately. But engineers start coding in fear—hiding bugs, cutting tests, shipping brittle hacks.

The harder path: be a shield. Leave the panic at the door. Push back with data and system trade-offs. Protect the team's focus so they don't have to code while guessing their boss's mood.

Bad management rarely starts with malice. It starts when you're tired, scared, and pass your burden onto people who cannot push back.
