Treating Myself to an HHKB

Treating Myself to an HHKB

HHKB Setup

It has been a while since I bought something purely for the fun of it.

I picked up an HHKB (Happy Hacking Keyboard). Getting used to it had a few bumps at first, mainly because the layout has no dedicated arrow keys. Moving around text without physical arrow keys feels weird when your fingers have twenty years of muscle memory.

Luckily, modern key mapping tools run right in the web browser now. Remapping keys on macOS was completely painless.

I spent about an hour adjusting the layout and practicing the Fn layer. By the end of the evening, my hands settled in. The compact symmetry feels surprisingly comfortable once the arrow keys move under your right hand's home row.

Sometimes, learning a slightly stubborn new tool is just the kind of quiet fun an engineer needs after a long week.
